I believe there are better ways to introduce children to beautiful language with God-honoring content so we'll be putting off Shakespeare as long as possible here. I do appreciate that this is a super-helpful list for those who wish to introduce Shakespeare to their children. I left that school at the end of that year so missed out completely.
I think many of us have faced similar dilemmas with myths, fantasy and even some of the Old Testament accounts. Ultimately, it's a call we make for our own families. There's some good thoughts here about Shakespeare:
http://higherupandfurtherin.blogspot.com.au/2007/05/what-so-great-about-shakespeare_1557.html
And this article also:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/william-shakespeare/10625363/Why-Shakespeare-should-be-childs-play.htmlCarolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820925595506920754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-25493425694288623652016-06-25T19:10:04.820+10:002016-06-25T19:10:04.820+10:00Thanks, Beth. Thanks, Beth.Carolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820925595506920754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-46707044553899143472016-06-25T19:09:39.094+10:002016-06-25T19:09:39.094+10:00Listening to the audio while following along with ...Listening to the audio while following along with the text of the play made Shakespeare accessible for me. I always get so much more out of a play if I've heard and read along prior to seeing it performed. My 8 year old says she LOVES Shakespeare which I find amusing -- she has read some Shakespeare storybooks and loves the Jim Weiss audio you mentioned above.
My exposure to Shakespeare in high school was brief, and not terribly memorable. I know we did a few plays, I'm sure that Taming of the Shrew was among them but other than that I can't really say. And I did see a live production in 10th or 11th grade at the Stratford Festival, but I'm not even 100% sure what play it was! King Lear or MacBeth I think.
I do struggle with the necessity of including Shakespeare in my children's education considering the adult themes and debauchery included. It's not something I've got figured out yet.Alisonhttp://www.learningmama.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-55576952294319819772016-06-23T00:49:05.372+10:002016-06-23T00:49:05.372+10:00Thank you for sharing these resources. I have a couple already, but I never thought of an audio version. And that Ian Serraillier edition looks great. We are familiar with his Beowulf and enjoyed his writing, so I will look to see if our library has that copy.
