He quite enjoys it now that he has the habit in place - he just needed a little guidance at first. Did you start the habit by requiring one a week, or did you begin with one a day and adapt from there?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07681782021483196362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-56753169826532976582015-05-19T15:08:50.483+10:002015-05-19T15:08:50.483+10:00Thank you, Celeste. Some days the content lends itself more to note booking. He covers science in three days a week; he prefers that to spreading it over the week and I expect him to do some sort of narration and/or illustration about what he's read - preferably both. I also get him to give me a short explanation about what he's narrated or drawn so I know he understands it. If he hasn't done as much as I think he should, the oral explanation usually reveals why or it might give me an idea of something else he perhaps should include. Then I get him to add that in. Sometimes it's helpful to find an online resource such as a video, simulation etc if the book is lacking in illustrations or diagrams. Does that answer your question?Carolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820925595506920754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-47188252927781716182015-05-19T14:17:23.698+10:002015-05-19T14:17:23.698+10:00Such neat and careful work by your teen scholar! The habit they have built and how they're being educated through those habits is wonderful to see.Celestehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05834674328751444179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-2292232163368710682015-05-18T21:50:49.123+10:002015-05-18T21:50:49.123+10:00I thought I left a comment but perhaps it didn'...I thought I left a comment but perhaps it didn't get through. I love your son's notebooks. He does a fantastic job and I got some more ideas for my sons Common Place Books. I have a question about the notebooks. If your son doesn't give what you feel is enough information on a notebook page how do you handle that? Or how do you get enough information out? I KNOW my sons know more than they put down on a page...sighChristyHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18314469368709173839noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-49120586208872600882015-05-17T20:29:43.099+10:002015-05-17T20:29:43.099+10:00Thanks for the tip. I think honing in on a couple of things, doing them consistently & doing them well is better in the long run :)Carolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820925595506920754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-64499850949873462172015-05-17T18:52:49.358+10:002015-05-17T18:52:49.358+10:00Lisa, whenever I've tried to introduce somethi...Lisa, whenever I've tried to introduce something new I often get a response like that, especially with the boys who were 'give me the facts' types. Maybe you could just aim for one entry a week and let them get used to the idea. In the passage from CM I quoted above she was referring to older children - https://www.amblesideonline.org/CM/vol5complete.html#260 so maybe even wait for a while until you start with your 13 yr old.Carolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820925595506920754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-24581699259409578862015-05-16T02:44:32.970+10:002015-05-16T02:44:32.970+10:00Great examples! It is wonderful to see how the process becomes habit and a part of a student's way of learning rather than just another assigned exercise or activity.MA Fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18156855913030661957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-15282511631968118152015-05-15T22:34:04.109+10:002015-05-15T22:34:04.109+10:00Such lovely work Carol! :)

To try to get them into the habit of jotting down favorite things from their readings has been a bit of challenge, mostly with the younger two boys. The oldest one usually does great with this. When I remind them to look for something in their readings to write down, they usually say, "I can't find anything to write!" So I decided to make it a daily requirement: one entry per day. But is forcing them to do it the wrong way to handle it?<br />What are your thoughts on encouraging them to do commonplace?Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13273301456471935137noreply@blogger.com
