Definitely a modern interpretation 😩
I’ve had that happen with a couple of other older authors where someone has to put their own spin on what someone else wrote. Very annoying. I so enjoyed seeing the places where authors had lived when they were alive, too. I am currently reading her book, Child of the Sea, which is set during the time of the English civil war and is quite interesting, although it is not as happy as most of her other books are, and seems to be heading towards a tragic ending. I will keep my eyes open for a copy of The Dean's Watch, as it sounds lovely.

I'd like to ask, Carol - is there really an incestuous relationship in The Mill on the Floss, or is this one of those modern interpretations of literature that seems to be preoccupied with sex? I've had that book on my shelf for years but have been hesitant to read it because of what I've heard said about it. In this post all of them are of books that I'm either already interested in, or you make me want to read.

The Dean's Watch I read at the perfect time, almost twenty years ago, all in a day, and its messages which I needed so much sank deep into me via those sympathetic characters.

I've read only a very little of Sayers or James and only one of theirs that you mention - and Nevil Shute does sound like an author I should read! At least, this particular book, which you say has a happy ending :-)

Thank you for taking the time to share your reading.GretchenJoannahttp://www.gretchenjoanna.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546783121640385268.post-37684023068768803912019-12-15T01:21:59.357+11:002019-12-15T01:21:59.357+11:00Some familiar friends, and other books that are su...Some familiar friends, and other books that are surely in my tbr list. I just finished Adam Bede. In that book too, Eliot’s take on Christianity comes out as very complex and not entirely negative. She had some nuanced views.
